Chris Johnson Signs New Contract

Chris Johnson’s holdout is officially over.

The Titans running back signed a 4 year, $53.5 million extension. He is now under contract with the Titans through the 2016 season. Johnson made news at the beginning of training camp when he refused to report until he got a new contract. He stood by that decision and has not reported to the Titans facilities to practice yet. However now that the sides were finally able to come to an agreement, Johnson will be in the Titans backfield come Week 1.

Many were surprised when owner Bud Adams first refused to pay Johnson. He is easily the best player on the team and in that situation and everyone assumed he would get a new contract. It turned into a stand-off between the two sides to see who will fold first. Clearly, Adams folded first. It is not surprising considering the start of the regular season is just around the corner. There is no way the Titans would have let this go into the regular season.

Johnson probably won’t play in the preseason finale against the Saints. He will most likely make his 2011 debut in the season opener against the Jaguars on September 11th.
